One of the most famous of the Canary Islands, Tenerife is always buzzing with life and action. Known for its beaches and nightlife, the island of Tenerife is located close to Gran Canaria, which lies to the east, with both Fuerteventura and Lanzarote being situated further east. To the west of Tenerife you will find the three smaller islands of La Palma, Gomera and Hierro. Tenerife North Airport (TFN) is the island's second airport and is situated just minutes away from the capital city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Santa Cruz is located on the north-eastern shoreline and is a major tourist resort, with a population approaching 200,000. Home to one of the busiest ports in the whole country, the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife features many brightly coloured buildings, both old and new. Much of life in Santa Cruz is based around the Plaza Espana public square, around which many places of interest can be found.

Nearby and to the west lies the town of La Laguna, a popular day trip from nearby Santa Cruz de Tenerife. La Laguna has much to offer, with many striking architectural highlights, a large selection of nightclubs and a 300-year-old university.

An impressive tourist destination, Puerta de la Cruz is sited on the north-western coast of Tenerife and welcomes visitors. With a beachfront promenade, plenty of palm trees and a spacious central plaza, popular attractions in Puerta de la Cruz include Loro Parque, which contains more than 3,000 colourful parrots and other exotic animals.

For the best beaches, head south towards the Playa de las Américas area and Los Cristianos, both of which boast miles of glorious sand and endless restaurants, shops and amenities. Those looking for natural flora and fauna on the island of Tenerife should visit the Parque Nacional del Teide, the biggest national park in the whole of Spain, situated in the very centre of the island.
